Weekly Challenge #11

First of all - a few house keeping items:

  • if you haven't seen the slideshow for Week #10 - you can see it here
  • To see all the past weekly challenges - click the tab above, or follow this link
  • Please grab the button for the Weekly Challenge (on the right sidebar) to display on your blogs! share the fun!
  • and i want to say a very extra special big heart felt thank you to everyone who donated funds last week.  I continue to be amazed by the generosity of spirit of this wonderful community.  HUGS!

Wow, how the time has flown by!  With ten challenges under our belt - i wanted to take this opportunity to talk a little bit about why i do these challenges.  Together we've created a place where like minded people are able to meet and share our work, and gain inspiration and learn new things - to expand our Zentangly horizons and stretch our limits... to get out of our comfort zones and realize that we are capable of what we thought incapable.

How many weeks have i not only read the words, but said the words myself: "i really struggled with this challenge", or how about "i didn't like it at first, but i kept going and by the end, i really loved what i had created".   By moving forward, we are embracing the Zentangle tag line: "You Can Do Anything, One Stroke at a Time"™

Something that is troubling to me, though, that i want to address is that this platform is in no way meant to cause stress, or feeling of judgment.  Please don't feel any obligation, like you HAVE to do each challenge each week.  If you are busy and feel like you are falling behind, don't stress!  Take a deep breath, smile, breathe, relax.  If you are up to it - jump in at the next challenge.  Work backwards from there if you like, or don't.  What i'm saying is, i don't want you to feel burdened by this in any way.

Also, i've had a few emails from people hoping that i will find their tile 'good enough' to be on the slideshow.  This is not a place for judgment, as i've said - and i would never deem myself in a position of any kind of authority to pass any kind of judgment.  I find each and every tile/piece beautiful.  Also, each challenge is open to interpretation.  There's no rule book, the Weekly Challenge Police are not going to come and bang down your door.

I guess, what i'm trying to say in a round about way - is that this is a place to come and feel good.  Feel the love, baby.   That's what it's all about.  Don't stress the small stuff... and it's all small stuff - hm, that'd make a great book, ha!

Okay, [steps off of soapbox] pep-talk over!

Let's get to the Challenge!

Week Eleven's Challenge: "Monotangle"

The term monotangle was coined by hubby, here in my basement, to describe a zentangle tile using only ONE tangle and it's variations.   i've created two to show you...

Using the tangle "Facets" created by Nancy Pinke, CZT instructions for this tangle can be found in the ZT Newsletter, here

In the above tile, this is an example of the 'official' Zentangle method of: Dots, Border, String - then filling each section of the tile with the same tangle in different sizes and different tangleations.

Using the official ZT tangle "Ibex"

In this tile, i just started in the middle of the tile and filled it until i was satisfied, no border, no string - just good ol' tangling.

Create a tile or Zentangle inspired piece using only ONE tangle!

What will you create within the elegance of limitation* of only one tangle?  And while we're on the topic of limitation - i'm going to have to cap the amount of entries to 4 per challenge.  This doesn't mean that you can only post 4 entries - no no noooo, it just means that i will only download 4 entries for the slideshow, of which i will download the first 4 presented to the challenge.  i hope that makes sense, somewhat.

*the 'elegance of limitations' phrase was coined by Rick Roberts co-founder of Zentangle®, i wish i could turn a phrase like that.

If you have a blog, add the site-specific URL where your tile is posted to the linkey machine below! Don't forget to link back here so that others can join in the fun! (if you don't know how to find this, you can see my half assed tutorial here)

Also, please feel free to come back often and visit the links of those people on the linkey machine - don't forget to leave a comment or feedback, everyone loves feedback. ;)

If you don't have a blog but still want to participate, you can email your tile to me and i will post it here. (See the contact tab above for my email address)

The deadline for each weekly challenge is Saturday night so that i can round everyone up by Sunday. What this means is that i will stop adding tiles to the slideshow on Sunday. You're still more than welcome to do the challenges and add your name to the linkey machine.

I will be more diligent with the linkey machine - by editing out the ones that don't work, the doubles, the links that lead to nowhere, the links that go just to blog home pages (this is why we need those site specific urls), and the spam. And there is some spam. :(

Weekly Challenge #10 "The Space Between" Slideshow

It's interesting the feedback from this challenge.  Some people had absolutely no trouble at all finding the space between, but many of us (myself included) struggled to leave that shiny white space peeking through our tangles.

Congrats, everyone, on another week of fabulous tangling!

Weekly Challenge #9 "New Tangle - artoo" Slideshow

i loved looking at these tiles this week, to see all the artoos growing and thriving, just like my own little weed. ;)

There were also a great many tangleations that i'm dying to try out!

Well, i'm all caught up now, things should "hopefully" get back to normal as far as having the slideshows up and running on Sundays. If i've missed your submission, i'm sorry. There are a lot of entries and i'm only human! hee hee. Just pop me an email with the URL where your tile is and i'll add it to the slideshow as soon as i can.

    Happy Tangling!!

    Weekly Challenge #10

First of all - a few house keeping items:

    • if you haven't seen the slideshow for Week #8 - you can see it here  I hope to have Challenge #9's slideshow up and running as soon as i'm able.  Watch for it this week.
HUGS!

I can't believe that it's already the tenth challenge! Where did the time go? It's been a pretty awesome ride so far, i have to say. What i had started out expecting to be only a handful of participants each week - has grown to such a wonderful community of tanglers... many who i count lucky to call my friends, after 10 weeks of reading your blogs and enjoying your pieces. So, thank you! :D

I'm also looking forward to some of you joining the ranks of CZTs after this week! I'm so jealous, you're going to have such an amazing time in Whitinsville! :)

So, this week i thought i'd make the challenge something that i have trouble with in my own work. There's a line from the Beatles song Within You Without You (click here for youtube) that goes: "We were talking about the space between us all" and all week while i was thinking about the next challenge, this line kept going over and over in my head.

when i do a Zentangle®, my tendency is to fill up every space.  Then, each week as i'm rounding up each entry for the slideshow - i'm always drawn to those aspects that i wish to emulate.  In this case, it's the 'space between' that i have been drawn to.

I did this one back when Artoo was in the hospital after he was born, but it took a lot for me NOT to fill up the 'loops' - as you can see, i DID actually end up putting something in the loops....

I never think to leave any white space when i do a tile.  The effect of white space can be dramatic, or can shed light in the dark, or can soften... i very often have to make a conscious effort to leave any white space.  But i love the look of it, soft and clean and open - bright and airy...

So, Challenge #10 "The Space Between" create a tile or Zentangle inspired piece being aware of the space between the tangles, leaving some white space.

This is clearly not a challenge for some - but it certainly was/is for me.  I will continue to play with this one well after this week is over.

If you have a blog, add the site-specific URL where your tile is posted to the linkey machine below! Don't forget to link back here so that others can join in the fun! Weekly Challenge #8 "hearts for artoo" Slideshow

these images are just beautiful, everyone.  But what's maybe even more beautiful is the love and the support that we've felt through our whole ordeal.

    Thank you,
love Laura, B-rad, Chewie and especially Artoo.  ♥

    Weekly Challenge #9

First of all - a few house keeping items:

    • if you haven't seen the slideshow for Week #7 - you can see it here  I hope to have Challenge #8's slideshow up and running as soon as i'm able.  Watch for it this week.
    • Please grab the button for the Weekly Challenge (on the right sidebar) to display on your blogs!
    • and i want to say a very extra special big heart felt thank you to everyone who donated funds last week.  I continue to be amazed by the generosity of spirit of this wonderful community.  HUGS!
Happy Valentine's Day everyone! i've been loving all your Hearts from last week.

Well, what can i say? It's been a long and crazy/hectic week at Casa Diva. And when i put out the call for good healing intentions for my son, Artoo - i have to tell you, i was overwhelmed by the response from all over the world!

In fact, i was brought to tears a few times by the generous nature of this amazing group of tanglers.

Artoo is home and we're all much happier.  He's almost back to 100%!  He's got a bit of a sniffle and a cough here and there, but to see his personality reappear was really and truly like a breath of fresh air.

Artoo - so happy to be home

I really didn't have as much time to tangle in the hospital as one would think, as Artoo needed a lot of care - suctioning and feeding and general cuddling.  We spent the better part of a week in isolation - meaning that i had to wear a gown and mask to hold and cuddle my baby.

Blowing Kisses to everyone who sent their love and healing thoughts

Let me tell you, when they gave us the okay to go home, i practically smothered that perfectly round head with kisses.  mask free.  heaven.

While i was there, the weather outside started to get warmer and cheerier, not that i ever ventured outside of my hospital room.  The nurses would talk about how nice it was, and i'd have to take them at their word.  Dreaming of spring, i did come up with a new Tangle, which i called "artoo", natch.

    New Tangle: Artoo

We got out of the hospital on Thursday afternoon, and we have been nesting - re-adjusting to the routine, enjoying being reunited as a family.  Chewie, our oldest, was happy to be staying the week at his Auntie Pam's, but he was thrilled to come home.  I was so excited to see him my heart practically burst.  sigh.  families.  yeah.

There hasn't been much time to do much else this week - so this week's challenge is to try out my new tangle - Artoo.

I hemmed and hawed about using this challenge to 'pimp' out my new tangle, but my hubby reassured me it was fine.  (thanks, babe!)

    Artoo update

Everyone, i want to say a big heartfelt thank you for the outpouring of love my family has been feeling from all over the globe.  i haven't had a chance to look at the entries, but i can't wait!

After 5 long days in the hospital, Artoo came home today.

He had a big old case of Respiratory Sincitial Bronchialitic Pneumonia.  phew. a mouth full.

we're so very happy to be home.

    Weekly Challenge #8

This will have to be a very quick post.
For those of you who have come by this weekend looking for the Challenge slideshow, my apologies. It's in the works, i swear - but we've had something come up unexpectedly: It's interesting that last week's challenge is the very thing that Artoo is uncapable of.

Starting on Thursday this week, Artoo started getting a cold - and it progressively worse - with a thick and heavy cough and wheezing.  On Saturday afternoon, i took him to the local clinic and was promptly sent to the Emergency Room at the hospital across town - where Artoo was admitted for Respiratory Distress.  They have done some tests to see what type of viral infection he has, but we will not know the results until tomorrow.

Artoo was not eating, and what we could get him to eat he would throw up minutes later.  So when we arrived at the Emergency room he was very dehydrated on top of having trouble breathing.  There's just so much mucous and being so young and a preemie at that, he lacks the tools to cope with something like this.  In essense, he was drowing in mucous.

The nurses had a very difficult time getting an IV in him yesterday, which was horrible to watch them fish around in his little head for a vein that would stay strong enough to insert the IV.  They had to call down specialists from the Neonatal unit to come and put in the IV, and even THEY had a difficult time.

He's been on the IV since we got admitted yesterday, as well as Oxygen, and a whole handful of various leads and monitors... add to all this his fancy new boots and braces for his club feet, it's pretty tricky to maneuver him.

He's been getting fluids via IV, but we've been feeding him by bottle bit by bit, to get him back up to where he can take a full feed by bottle.  They did lower his oxygen a bit today, and they've been giving him a puffer to help him breathe and he's been sleeping pretty deeply.

Right now i'm writing all of this from the Pediatric Ward Play Room at the hospital.

I came with the intent of postponing this week's challenge, but my hubby had a great idea.

So, this week's challenge is to create a heart, using TWO previous challenges (Found Here) together.  So, maybe you use Ixorus and a Double String, or a Blind String with Starry Eyed Surprise... and maybe you could send your healing intent to our little baby as you do your entry.

I will do the challenge and post my entry when things have calmed down on the home front - and i promise to get the Slideshow for last week's challenge up and running as soon as i'm able.  In fact, i was in the middle of creating it when we decided we should probably take Artoo to a doctor yesterday.

If you have a blog, add the site-specific URL where your tile is posted to the linkey machine below! Don't forget to link back here so that others can join in the fun! Looking for this week's challenge? it's here

    Just a quick update,
Artoo's Last Casts are coming off tomorrow!!  Freedom!!
Well, like i said to Artoo just now, "You'll soon be free of these casts, my boy, then into a whole other kind of jail, but we'll worry about that tomorrow."

As of tomorrow we start with the boots and braces.
    wish us luck!
