Weekly Challenge #282

Happy Monday!

well, here it is. The last few days of summer before school starts for these kids.  We are trying to eke out the last bits of fun times before it's back into the routine of every day life.

This week i took the boys to a matinee to see the Secret Life of Pets, which they both really enjoyed.

Movie Time!

these trailers sure are bright

We also went and spent a sunny afternoon at the out door pool with my mom and my niece, had a playdate with friends from out of town, and then went out to dinner with some different freinds from out of town - and to top off the busy week Chewie started league bowling on Saturday mornings!

THROW!
There was art to be had too, as i've been playing around a lot with some fun Happy Mail (which i'll post about later) and a big project i'm working on in the house - Artoo and I did a bit of chalk drawing, complete with chocolate chip cookies on our faces.

Artoo is writing out a playlist of his favourite songs here
Things will be chaotic - i'm sure - in the coming weeks as the boys adjust to getting back into school mode - Artoo will be going into the first grade and there will probably be some adjusting to going to school every day for the full day... for mama too.  Hold me.....

At least i've got tangling to keep my sane.

Weekly Challenge #282: "Spill It!"
A little while ago my bestie gifted me with two big delicious beets, fresh from her garden.  I love beets, so i was thrilled to have them.

That night, as i was washing and peeling and chopping the beets for dinner, i was awestruck, as i often am, of the vibrant magenta colour and i thought: I wonder what would happen if i spilled these peels onto a zentangle tile?

The result? a Big Beautiful Magenta splotch - which i used as a string and tangled.

here's the result
Beautiful
It was super fun and i still am in total love with this colour.

This week's challenge is to spill something onto your tile and then tangle it.  It doesn't have to be beets, lol.

I also did an ATC using coffee as my Spill

SPLORCH
and then the finished result:

fancy
You could use coffee, or tea, or wine, or beets - anything that will leave a splotch!  Food colouring in water? Water colours? what else? Enjoy!

And if you're on the Zentangle Mosaic App, - i'm @iamthediva - come on by and follow me, and i'm going to be using hashtags on the app for each of my weekly challenges.  So if you're game use the hashtag #DC282 (Diva Challenge #282) for your tile this week!  You can also search in the app for people's contributions to the challenge by clicking on the hashtag from inside the app, or using the search function.  I'm also on instagram @iamthediva

Weekly Challenge #281

Good Morning!

This past week while B-rad worked i took the boys camping with my mom in her camper/trailer at a nearby provincial park.
annnnnnnd off we go!!
The boys had fun playing in the sand and the water.

artoo had fun burying his legs

look at that smile
We had beautiful weather the whole time.  Sunny days and warm nights.

Happy brothers

Silly brothers
And here's a shot of me and my mama

It was nice to have a place for the little dudes to chill out after being in the hot sun all afternoon - they were wiped.

at bedtime we were treated to this!
Tuesday brought another gorgeous day, so a bit of toast was had - then back to the beach!

when camping with kiddos, always - ALWAYS - bring a grandma
bedtime smores
We didn't have any graham crackers so Chewie had the idea to improvise with Ritz Crackers - and they were surprisingly tasty.

The second and last night drew to an unexpected close as suddenly a storm rolled in and we were serenaded by thunder all night long

much coffee was had.  much. much coffee.

Weekly Challenge #281: "Tangle study-ING"

When i was in Providence for CZT training #15 Molly introduced us to the tangle ING - you can see the step outs here

I learned it along with my fellow CZTs and i admit that i haven't used it much since then.  In fact i've only used it once or twice since then - so it's about time.  I haven't really wrapped my head around it so that i can do it without looking at the step outs, but i'm working on it.

i tried ING in a circle, it's okay.
Have fun with this week's challenge!  Happy Tangl-ING

And if you're on the Zentangle Mosaic App, - i'm @iamthediva - come on by and follow me, and i'm going to be using hashtags on the app for each of my weekly challenges.  So if you're game use the hashtag #DC281 (Diva Challenge #281) for your tile this week!  You can also search in the app for people's contributions to the challenge by clicking on the hashtag from inside the app, or using the search function.

Weekly Challenge #280

Happy Monday all!

It hasn't felt much like there's any summer left up here this week - and a majority of this week was nothing but rain.  We did, however, get out to the Saskatoon Exhibition on the weekend!

Thankfully the weather cooperated as we enjoyed a beautifully sunny day

The boys were a bit more adventurous with rides having been at Disneyland this year

When at the fair, Candy Apples are a must

One of the only pictures i got of all four of us on the Ferris Wheel/Gondala which i tried very hard not to be squirmy about - as i'm not a big fan of heights

Artoo really loved the small ferris wheel and the caterpillar rollarcoaster.

Look at that face!!

We had a really great day - enjoying the rides and the fairground snacks and the booths filled with 'as seen on tv' devices that you don't really need, but you can't help but watch the demonstrations thinking: "hmm....mayyybe?"

don't worry, we didn't buy any...  ;)

Weekly Challenge #280: "Rio Olympics!"

Have you all been watching the Olympics? Sadly, i haven't been - but this is mainly because i don't have TV! (Don't worry, i still have Netflix) But i have been watching the replays and the clips and reading the articles!!

This week i received a text from my fellow Saskatonian CZT Margaret Bremner, suggesting the olympic be the theme of this week's challenge - and i thought HECK YES!

Something really cool for me is seeing that one of the players for Team Canada's Men's Volleyball is a kid i used to babysit when i lived in BC!  #2 Gord Perrin (and also his brother and two sisters) were my little charges for many a summer back in the Creston Valley!  It's been exciting to see him in action, their match against the USA team was actually one of the only bits of the Olympics i've been able to watch in real time.

GO Gord GO!!
i used a zentangle apprentice tile for mine tile this week, because i wanted a bit more space to work in

So here's my tile for this week's challenge!  I read that the 5 olympic rings symbolize the continents Africa, Asia, America, Europe, and Oceania

I added a laurel crown of Flux, and then tangled the background using Gold, Silver, and Bronze Sakura Gelly roll metallic pens.

This week let the Olympics inspire you!

Have FUN!

And if you're on the Zentangle Mosaic App, - i'm @iamthediva - come on by and follow me, and i'm going to be using hashtags on the app for each of my weekly challenges.  So if you're game use the hashtag #DC280 (Diva Challenge #280) for your tile this week!  You can also search in the app for people's contributions to the challenge by clicking on the hashtag from inside the app, or using the search function.

Weekly Challenge #279

Hello all!  And a happy Monday to you!

As i'm typing this it's very late sunday night - my family and i arrived home late last night (sunday) because we were at a family Reunion this weekend to celebrate my grandma's 80th birthday.
A short hike for all the 'little' families - they went on a bigger hike afterwards

My mother is the oldest of 7 children and amazingly enough all of her siblings came! We rented out a massive house just outside of Waterton National Park in Alberta and the weekend was jam packed with hiking and giant Jenga and karaoke and highly intense games of charades.
artoo and chewie learning about mountain lions

INTENSE

We had a formal dinner/talent show/birthday party for Grandma and she was so happy to see so many of her friends and family there.  I love her.
isn't she lovely?
It was incredible to be able to be with everyone this weekend to hear them sharing stories of how they grew up, and sharing stories about my Grandpa who passed away when i was a baby.

ON to this week's challenge!!

Weekly Challenge #279: "Duotangle Meer vs Auraknot"
A Duotangle is a term originating here on the blog for a tile using only the two tangles - in this case; Meer and Auraknot (Step outs in the links) and their variations.

ta da!

these tangles are in my go-to toolbox - so t his was a fun tile for me, albeit a quick one.  ;)

Have fun using these two tangles!

Tangle ON peoples!

Weekly Challenge #278

Hey Hey!!

I hope you all had a lovely Monday without me.  It was Saskatchewan Day here in the Skatch, so we celebrated Long Weekend Style... not that WE did much celebrating, beyond B-rad camping outside in the backyard with the boys.  (I slept in my own bed, because i'm a delicate flower)

The boys' last day of school was June 30, and we left for California on July 2, so this was their real and true FIRST week of being home with 'nothing to doooooo' and all week long i heard the song of 'iiiii'm borrrrred'.... so, that's been fun.  It's not like we aren't doing fun things like going to the park and to the pool - but going from having every moment of the day being filled with activities to suddenly having to entertain themselves for a large portion of the day has been quite a switch for them.  We're coping. lol.

Okay, so back to the back half of the Trip!!  it's IMAGE HEAVY - so hang in there. The Challenge is way at the bottom if you wanna skip the trip. ;)

We made it to the Moebius Conference in Long Beach, CA - and Artoo was so excited to see his favourite person Austin Halls!  Austin is an awesome and amazing kid with Moebius Syndrome who is really setting an example for the little ones - Artoo just LOVES him.  He may be his biggest fan - and Austin is also a singer and songwriter!! (if you click the link you'll be taken to his EP on iTunes, for which all the money goes to the Moebius Syndrome Foundation)

Artoo and Austin!!
The theme of the conference was very Hollywood and they had a "Red Carpet" set up, which was actually purple, and we took our pictures in front of the moebius backdrop

smiles!
We were lucky enough at the last conference in DC to have  Rick Guidotti take our family picture. We were super excited to see our family portrait as one of the decorations in the hotel lobby. I ran into Rick Saturday morning and he saw me and exclaimed: "LAURA!! So awesome to see you! Where's Artoo??" and i told him he was having breakfast in the banquet hall - and Rick said: "Okay! y'know i just posted your guys' picture on my facebook page - it's one of my favourites.  We HAVE to get a reshoot for this year! Find me later and we'll take another one!"

We did.  When i get the new one i'll show you all.

My and my gal pal Kelsey!
The sessions were educational and the boys LOVED the daycare and playing with their friends, but one of the highlights for B-rad and i is always hanging out in the hotel bar with our old friends!!

Tim Smith - the man behind the Many Faces of Moebius Syndrome website
and the Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day
Tim was one of the first guys B-rad and i ever met - way back at our first conference in 2012 in Philadelphia.  He was so welcoming and hilarious, that we always make sure we have a drink.  In this case it was SPICY MARGARITAS!!  Apparently this bar makes their margarita syrup with spicy peppers.... it was very spicy.
Artoo haz a trophy and i haz the prouds
Artoo sang in the talent show again, and he was a bit nervous because everyone was screaming and cheering and it was all very loud - but he did amazing singing "HandClap" by his favourite band Fitz and the Tantrums!

And just like that it was Sunday and the conference was over and we were on our way back home....slowly... because we made a stop in Hollister, CA where my aunt lives and visited some very old trees.....

It's a tree.  A redwood.
I love the Red Woods.  I saw them when i was 20 the last time i made the trek to california - and it was the ONLY thing on B-rad's Must See list.  And it was totally worth it.

that's a big clover

Pikachu and Chewie inside a hollow tree

Artoo

Artoo and B-rad in the hollow of a tree

i heart this guy

that's a big tree

THAT is a tall tree... and that's my b-rad
We were only there for a few hours, but we could have stayed way longer.  Maybe someday we'll come back and visit more.

We made it back to Canada by way of Creston, B.C., which is where i grew up.  I wanted to show my boys where i lived and went to school before i moved to Saskatoon.

this is where i used to live.
Chewie really wanted to do some hiking - so our family friend Paige took us up the mountain from his home where we were staying.  We learned a lot - and we tasted thimbleberries and wild raspberries, and huckleberries, and blackberries and rosehips.  We learned how to make a shelter for the night, which trees were good for bow and arrows, how to find water if you're lost in the woods, how bears turn over rocks for bugs... Chewie was soaking it all in.

hiking and picking wild flowers
ready to survive in the wilderness!

We also stopped in at the brewery were Kokanee Beer is made and took a few pics...

SUCH BEER!!

Artoo and his trusty dog caught the Saskquatch
and we ended the day with ice cream

mmmmm

so yum
we got back to our family friends' place to find that they had been busy making huckleberry pie.  ZOMG.  you guys.  It was the best pie ever.  It was seriously so good and just looking at this picture makes me salivate.
HUCKLEBERRY PIE!!
and we also had fresh peaches and cream - peaches picked that morning, that is.

seriously. this. pie.

The next day we did a 13 hour drive back home - it was long, but we were all anxious to sleep in our own beds.

WE ARE HOME!
PHEW! and that concludes the crazy photo bomb post.  Thanks for hangin' in there...

It was 21 days on the road, 9 states (10 if you count going through Idaho twice), 3 provinces, 7164.2 km (4,451.63 miles) - Yellowstone Park, Valley of Fire State Park, Las Vegas, Disneyland, California Adventure, SeaWorld, Legoland, Moebius Conference, Red Wood Forest, and Creston Valley BC, and we survived to tell the tale.  And as B-rad said to me as we put our heads down onto our own pillows in our own bed that night: "Now, let's never do that again."

Back to regular life!

Weekly Challenge #278: "UMT - Knightstar by Daniel Lamothe, CZT"

Here we are, the first Monday (in today's case TUESDAY) of the month so that means Use My Tangle (UMT) where we try our hand at one of tangles that you've created.

Today's tangle was created by Daniel Lamothe called Knightstar - you can find the VIDEO here.

I like it because it's built off those line graphs from high school
then draw a line connecting plot y1 to plot x1 - or something.
i barely passed math.

so cool.
So here's my zendala tile using Daniel's tangle Knighstar

fancy
A few things about my tile.... the next time i try knightstar i will make a LARGER grid to work in.  it felt quite small and cramped, i should have made it bigger.

also - making my grid curvy added another element of tricky to the tangle.

i was super frustrated with this tile from the get-go - mainly because i struggle so much with the tan coloured tiles.

for the flux areas, i began colouring it in with my gel pens, but these tiles really suck up the ink so much i thought "i'll just switch to this sharpie paint pen!" which worked great, except the nib of the sharpie caused my tile to pill all over the place... when the paint was try i tried tangling over it with my Micron and killed my pen in the process... at about this point i was very tempted to throw the whole thing out, but instead used a posca paint pen in black to tangle over the white.  That worked okay, but again caused the soft tile to pill.

BUT i didn't give up - and i kept at it... and i'm quite glad that i did because in the end i actually really like this tile now.

For those of you who are new, the first Monday of every month is a Use My Tangle Challenge, where the challenge of the week is to use a tangle created by one of you!  If you have a tangle you'd like to submit you can add it here and be sure that it follows the guidelines for submission.

Have a great week!
